Voopoo Drag S2: Dynamite in a Small Package!

First Impressions of the Drag S2: “Meh” overall…

The Drag X is a very popular device, and has been for a long time. When we found out there would be essentially a “X2” coming we got excited. The Drag S2 is basically the replacement for the Drag X, with mainly just upgrades in the same form factor.

The day the Drag X2 arrived, we at Canada Vapes were excited to use the new product. However, it was met with a “meh” attitude all around. The airflow was too much, the coils just weren’t up to PnP standard, and the child safety feature to fill the device is just too cumbersome. It looked like the vape device would be a flop, and we doubted it would sell too many.

Drag S2 Extended Impressions: “WOW!”

However, I took the vape device aside and gave it an extended testing. The only thing I can say about it now is “WOW!”
The test model I have is in the Modern Red colorway. It is a red and purple-ish gradient with a bit of tasteful embossed leather on the back. It is lightweight, yet not cheap feeling. The screen is bright, easy to read and colorful. The buttons are clicky and responsive, not just the fire button but the adjustment buttons as well. The menu is simple, but could use a few more settings such as a dimmer. It does have a puff reset and a mode selector. The device will fire from 5w-60w, with 3 modes.
  • RBA mode is your typical variable wattage mode
  • Smart mode adjusts your power to where Voopoo believes is the optimal firing wattage for the coils
  • Eco dims your screen and firing a little slower to conserve power.

The device was mainly used in Smart mode, as Voopoo recommends. I average 2 days on average between charges, which is definitely a good amount of power. I tested it with the 0.3 coil at 35 watts.

The PnP X Platform – If This is the Future, We Are in Good Hands!

Which brings me to the coil. This is the star of this show, by far. PnP was a platform Voopoo used for a long time, and they worked extremely well. They just improved on the PnP and added an X. The PnP X platform is in a word, amazing. They offer 6 different coil varieties. Only 3 are recommended for use with the Drag S2, the 0.2, the 0.3, and the 0.45. These coils do have a slight break in period. The one I used it took around a full tank, but once they were broken in, the flavour was incredible. I have been using the Freemax Maxus 3 kit and lately a Vaporesso Luxe XR Max. With the same juice, I would 100% prefer the PnP X coil. The flavour notes on the liquid I am using really pop. With other liquids I have tried such as fruits and other desserts, the same was true. The coils really are amazing at any wattage. With the expectation the PnP set, I was not too surprised that Voopoo would knock this out of the park.

Excellent Improvement on an Excellent Platform!

The improvements are exactly what they needed though. Voopoo has ditched the bottom airflow on the Drag S2 and gone with a top airflow. The airflow on the Drag S2 is FAR too much for a 0.3 coil head, however I consulted their website and they recommend to set the airflow at about halfway open for the 0.3. I did that and got the “WOW!” effect. I even tightened it a little more for my liking, to around 1/3 open. It is still quite wide and airy, but still nice and loose for a slight restricted lung hit. The airflow is quiet, and has no weird whistle sounds or anything like that. They are calling these pods “cartridges” and are available in a 2 pack. They connect much like the Drag X, with magnets into the device. To my surprise though, there is absolutely 0 leaking juice into the device, which was a common issue with my Drag X. I have put about 10 tanks worth of liquid through this device so far, and have had absolutely 0 liquid in the device to clean up. Not a single drop. That is amazing, as pod systems in general have a tendency to leak.

The Only Con of the Drag S2, but Not a Fault of the Device…

The only negative I have about the device is the child safety lock on the cartridge though. I fully understand that the government has a lot of rules about how the child safety has to be on a vape device, and I agree our children need to be protected against this. However, it should not be as difficult to fill my vape device as it is to disarm a bomb. There is a plastic ring that needs to be rotated and shifted all over to refill the e-liquid, as well as to remove the coil. It kind of reminds me of a puzzle box. I believe it may be a bit overkill, and I believe there may be room for improvement, hopefully they release a new cartridge with a better design.
Voopoo does offer a MTL cartridge for the device. They do not seem to be CRC certified right now, hopefully that changes in the future, but for right now we have  the DL cartridge, which has a ton of top airflow, and boasts 5mL liquid capacity. Thankfully I don’t find myself filling it too much as that would be a major headache.

The Final Verdict of the Drag S2…

The verdict is that this device is great, it started out not too well, but with using it for the last week, I have certainly changed my mind. Voopoo has hit this device out of the park, and with the gripe about the CRC child safety, I would have no negative to say about this device. However, that is the only downside, and there will be a video following on how to fill the pod and change the coil.

It definitely gets a solid 9/10 rating though. It will be available on August 1st at Canada Vapes!
